How do you involve residents in a transition that often feels distant, technical and imposed?

For the LIFE project, I researched the social and cultural factors influencing the energy transition in Amsterdam Zuidoost. Through contextual research, I explored themes such as energy poverty, trust, participation and the area's unique identity.

One key insight was that residents were often less interested in the energy transition itself than in the future of their neighbourhood. This shifted the project from explaining energy systems towards making future developments tangible and relatable.

The result was Maps, an interactive projection installation that visualises future plans for Amsterdam Zuidoost in public space. By transforming complex urban and energy developments into an accessible visual experience, the concept encourages conversation, understanding and participation in the neighbourhood's future.
